In 2022, Portugal’s bicycle exports reached 800 million euros, a year-on-year increase of 37%, with 95% of bicycle production used for exports, with France, Germany, the Netherlands, and Spain being Portugal’s main export destinations.
From January to November 2022, Portugal exported 175.8 million euros to France, a year-on-year increase of 87.9%, 173.3 million euros to Germany, a year-on-year increase of 59.3%, and 80 million euros to the Netherlands, a year-on-year increase of 75.9%. Since then, Portugal has remained the top exporter of bicycles in Europe for three consecutive years.
Decades of technological accumulation have made Portugal particularly strong in component production, and there are many outstanding bicycle manufacturers. However, in the 1980s, more and more companies migrated to Asia to save costs, leading to a downturn in Portugal’s bicycle industry.
After 2000, the situation changed again. Portuguese companies no longer compete with Asian goods in terms of prices, but instead focus more on producing high-quality parts, focusing on high-tech and sustainable development. In addition, the EU’s anti-dumping measures have reduced the market share of low-cost goods produced in Asia, giving local enterprises greater development space. Their long manufacturing history and rich professional knowledge have also attracted many international manufacturers. Moreover, the cooperation between Portuguese bicycle manufacturers is very high, and the mutual support of local enterprises has improved the retention rate of customers. The cohesion of the industry has further accelerated the development of production scale.
